People say “things happen for a reason” and while it is cliché they are right. There are several things that take place because of a catalyst that ignite a reaction.
Have you ever seen the Back to the Future movies? Well, if you haven’t it is a series of movies and here is a quick synopsis. The Back to the Future series is about time travel featuring Doc and Marty and the flux capacitor (time travel machine). First, they see a mistake or problem in the present that needs to be fixed. So they go back in time to correct the mistake. Then, after fixing the problem head back to the future with the mistake now fixed while discovering other things were affected. The entire concept is that life is like a domino effect. If they can fix the right domino the rest will fall in place where they should and everyone lives happy ever after.
This is my Back to the Future story however; my story doesn’t include time travel. For the sake of privacy this is about John Doe and John Doe Jr…
I received a phone call on my cell phone from an unrecognized number in my phone. I do a ton of business on my phone, so it is common to not know the number. Therefore, I called the number back. It was a man who sounded anxious by the name of John Doe. Doe asked me if I knew his son John Doe Jr. I replied his name doesn’t sound familiar. So I asked how Jr. knows me. Doe Sr replies his son passed away last night and he found my business card on his desk in his room. So Doe Sr. asked if I sold his son a life insurance policy. I immediate give my condolences for his loss. Doe Sr thanked me but still questioned if I sold Jr a policy. I told him his name doesn’t ring a bell but let me look through my client files. After searching through my client files I noticed that I have never sold a policy to John Doe Jr. My notes indicated that he wanted to wait because he was young and didn’t think it was important to him at this time of his life.
I called John Doe Sr back to tell him the unfortunate news. Doe Sr. was broken and asked how will the family pay for the burial with all of the things they have to handle now at this very moment in their life. I could only state how sorry I was. He went on to tell me that he divorced Jr’s mother years ago, she doesn’t have any funds either, Jr left behind three kids, a wife, and he has no clue what to do. I again said so sorry I wasn’t able to fix this when I had the opportunity.
This is not the first time this has happened in my almost 10 years in this industry. I feel as if I have a responsibility to help my clients make responsible decisions about their final wishes being met keeping the financial burden off of their family. I wish I had a flux capacitor to go back in time and talk again to Jr. Unfortunately, “Back to the Future” and the flux capacitor is not real outside of the motion pictures. We know our birth dates but we do not know our death dates. Be responsible and make your final memory to your family a celebration of your life, not a burden of another bill.
